These photographs aim to expose the fine interplay between today and yesteryear in the modern context. The shops within my series embody feelings of nostalgia and the people within them portray an eagerness to create something new from the old. These individuals borrow from the past, but live in the present and with their choice of dress they merge the two, creating something entirely different in the process. As Graham Clarke said, “[the portrait’s] purpose is both the description of an individual and the inscription of social identity”. The people within the stores are as much a part of their surroundings as the surroundings are a part of them.

Note - The titles, though some quite descriptive of the subject, are all names of the actual stores in Brighton, England. They were taken in 2011, so the stores may or may not exist today.
